Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen (Chorale Prelude)
Music: Chorale Prelude No. 8 in F major, Op. 122, “Es ist ein Ros’ entsprungen” | Johannes Brahms
Es ist ein Ros entsprungen, generally translated as Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming,
is linked in reference to the Old Testament prophecies in Isaiah 11:1:
And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.

The origins of the hymn predate the 17th century, first appearing in print in 1599, but is best known
with the melody harmonized by the German composer Michael Praetorius in 1609.

Johannes Brahms used this tune as the basis for his Chorale prelude in 1896.
